“St Margaret’s Centre has given me focus on foggy days – I’ve made real friends and feel loved and accepted for being me.”

St Margaret’s Centre offers a fully equipped workshop where people can learn and practice woodworking and joinery skills, with projects such as birdboxes, wooden toys, and furniture items designed to introduce new skills, which builds confidence and raises self-esteem. No matter your level of experience, our instructor and trained volunteers will help you to develop new skills using a variety of hand and power tools so you can learn different ways of assembling components to make a finished product, providing a real sense of achievement.

The atmosphere in the workshop is friendly and supportive, and working with wood has real, measurable health and wellbeing benefits. The natural warmth and tactile nature of wood can have a soothing effect upon people, lowering blood pressure and heart rates as well as reducing stress and anxiety. Working in a small and friendly group has known mental health benefits, helping to build friendships and reduce social anxiety.
